Homemade bakery for cats: 3 sweet, safe ideas to spoil them
September 09, 2026
If you think cats are only serious and aloof, you've surely seen your kitty rub its head against you when you pull out a can of food. Sometimes a small sweet gesture can lift their mood and strengthen the bond between you. But careful — not just any human sweet is fine for them. At Huellas de Casa, based in El Vendrell, we believe in the power of natural, handmade food. Today we bring you three homemade bakery ideas for cats that are safe, nutritious and, above all, irresistible.
Why homemade bakery beats store-bought treats
Most commercial cat treats contain preservatives, artificial colourings and low-value flours that can cause intolerances over time. By making them yourself, you control absolutely every ingredient. We don't use sugar, since cats don't have the receptors to taste sweetness, and excess sugar can lead to obesity or liver problems. Instead, we use the natural fat from meat or fish, which is what really attracts them.
3 easy recipes to get started
- Tuna and rice mini cookies: A favourite for many kitties. You'll need 200 g of tuna in water (well drained), 100 g of cooked rice (no salt) and a little rice flour to bind. Mix it all, shape into small balls and bake at 150°C until crunchy. The smell of tuna makes them irresistible.
- Mini chicken and pumpkin croquettes: Chicken is rich in protein and pumpkin helps digestion. Cook the boneless chicken and pumpkin until soft. Blend the mix and add a little chickpea flour so it isn't sticky. Shape into thin strips and bake until golden. Perfect for cats with a sensitive stomach.
- Goat's milk and sardine dessert: Yes, goat's milk (not cow's milk, which causes more intolerances) and fresh sardine. Lightly cook the sardine, blend it with a little warm goat's milk into a paste. Let it cool and serve on a small spoon. It's a very special moist treat.
Storage tips
Since these are 100% homemade products with no preservatives, storage is key. Keep the crunchy mini cookies in an airtight glass jar in the fridge — they'll last up to a week while keeping their texture. For the moist preparations, it's best to make small portions and freeze them in flat bags. You can take out one portion whenever you want to treat your cat, thawing it at room temperature.
At Huellas de Casa we understand that every pet is unique. If you don't feel like cooking, or if your cat has specific dietary needs (such as chicken allergies or kidney problems), we'll prepare customised packs with selected ingredients at our shop in El Vendrell. What matters most is that what your furry companion eats is as good for their health as it is for your heart. Try one of these recipes and tell us how it went!
